Flooring Underlay
Flooring underlay is a vital part of preparing to install many different types, including laminate, engineered wood, and LVT. Underlay is commonly used on floating floors, which means that the flooring is not glued or nailed to the subfloor, and rather ‘click’ or ‘lock’ into place.
Laying underlay has many advantages, including helping to make your new flooring more cushioned and comfortable underfoot, to provide acoustic and thermal insulation, and create a moisture barrier between the subfloor and surface layer.
Underlay comes in a variety of materials and choosing which one depends on what type of flooring you are installing, as well as the kind of subfloor you are laying it over. For laminate floors, opt for foam underlay, and consider one with a vapour barrier if laying over concrete. You can also use foam with engineered wood, but if fitting it in an area with high footfall, you may want to choose a more dense underlay such as rubber.
